Hi, I am a 16 year-old female. I started experiencing hair loss when I was 13-14 years old, but it wasn’t serious. It only became worst when I was 15 years old. I decided to see the doctor and he prescribed me 2% minoxidil. He said my hairloss was heriditary, because my father also suffered male-pattern hairloss. (My hairloss was mostly the scalp area.) However, there was a period of time, when I was 12, I used to tie my hair tightly. Also, it was the time I caught the lices and my mother used to dettol to killed it. I wonder if it could also be the cause of hairloss?

It may be a combination of things. The tight hair styles may cause traction alopecia, which sometimes responds at least partially to minoxidil.

There may also be some inherited traits, but you probably need to be worked up more thoroughly by a hair specialist. A scalp biopsy may be required to give the diagnosis, as there may be something else going on.

Traction alopecia is hair loss that is caused by long term hair pulling and breakage due to very tight ponytail, hair weaves and cornrows.
